Texas Medical Center and Museum District
Located in the heart of Houston is the world’s largest medical district, the Texas Medical Center. It boasts of the most number of clinical and medical facilities for research, basic science and patient care. The Texas Medical Center has several hospitals and schools of medicine, nursing, public health, dentistry and pharmacy. As of 2006, there were 73,500 people employed in the center.
Growth in the Texas Medical Center occurs on a daily basis. With the construction of new medical office buildings, residential real estate in the Texas Medical has begun to flourish. New condo and apartment complexes have been built to satisfy the housing need around the Texas Medical Center.
Founded in 1945, the Texas medical center has served its general purpose and that is to provide all types of medical services. Meanwhile academic and research institutions located in the center include the Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Heart Institute, The Methodist Healthcare System and The University of Texas System. Support facilities include the Houston Academy of Medicine, Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center and the City of Houston Department of Health and Human Services.
Transportation to and from the Texas Medical Center is provided by METRORail light rail system and the Metro bus service. This offers all residents and visitors easy access and convenient travel to both Downtown Houston and Midtown Houston.
Aside from the Texas Medical Center, another must-see is the Museum District. Located just south of Downtown Houston; the Museum District showcases the city’s past in all its glory. The district offers a multitude of parks, museums, historical sites and many more. the most noteworthy of these places include the Holocaust Museum, Contemporary Arts Museum and the Museum of Natural Science. Approximately 7 million visitors go to the Museum District each year.
The Children’s Museum of Houston is perfect for the little ones. There are 14 hands-on galleries including the KID-TV and EcoStation that will provide children with unforgettable experiences. The Menil Collection, located at Sul Ross is home to the popular collection of the famous couple John and Dominique de Menil. For unique cultural and art experiences, visitors should head on over to the Art Car Museum, Blaffer Gallery and the Orange Show Center for Visionary Arts. The two gallery clusters located in Montrose and in the Upper Kirby district will also provide much enjoyment.
